How to Update Your Home on a Budget: Easy DIY Ideas That Make a Big Impact

For the longest time, I thought updating my home meant an overwhelming amount of work or a full-on remodel. But after years of DIY projects, I’ve found the opposite is true — the best updates are often the simplest (and cheapest!). Here are the budget-friendly tricks I swear by to keep my home feeling fresh year-round.
Here are some of my favorite low-cost and free home updates:
DIY Projects With Big Style Impact
Updating Hardware with Rub ‘n Buff
Don’t underestimate what a $7 tube of Rub ’n Buff can do. I’ve used it on door handles, picture frames, and even lamp bases. It’s the fastest way I know to make something look like you actually planned it that way. It’s a quick fix that makes a big impact.

DIY Fabric Projects: Curtains, Headboards & Upholstery
I’ve re-covered chairs and ottomans, built custom headboards, and made DIY pinch-pleat curtains — they’re all projects that come together fast and don’t leave you cleaning up paint for days afterward. You don’t need advanced sewing skills — iron-on hem tape and a staple gun go a long way.

DIY Artwork & Wall Decor Ideas
Blank walls don’t have to stay blank. I’ve used thrift store frames for my favorite prints, and even painted my own abstract art. This is one of the cheapest ways to fill your walls with personality. Try simple wall molding for a blank wall, or frame out an old bathroom mirror for a custom look.

Repurposed Furniture
If you have a dated (or broken) piece of furniture, give it new life. I’ve cut down a dresser to use as a nightstand, swapped out furniture legs on a bench to turn it into a console table, and even painted a plain Rubbermaid cabinet to use as garden storage. I once turned an old china cabinet into a home bar. Then, sold it for twice what I paid. Now we use an antique armoire — best upgrade ever.
Quick Fixes That Make a Big Difference
Fresh Coat of Paint
If you are looking to update your home on a budget, I would start here. Paint is hands down the cheapest way to make a room feel brand new. Instead of committing to every wall, start smaller. Freshen up your baseboards and trim, or try repainting your front door. Even a side table or dresser can look like new with a coat of paint.

Declutter and Organize
Sometimes, the best way to prevent yourself from buying anything new is to clean and declutter. Decluttering can make a room feel larger and more open, and doesn’t cost a thing. Use baskets, trays, and storage bins you already have to organize. Once your space is clear, it’ll feel like a brand-new room.

Thrift Store Treasures
Almost every shelf in my home has something thrifted on it. Frames, mirrors, vases — they’re everywhere, and most cost under $10. Remember: you can always paint it.

Shop Small
You don’t have to hit big-box stores for affordable décor. Etsy is one of my favorite places to find unique pieces — everything from embroidered trims to cabinet and door hardware. Plus, you’re supporting small businesses while scoring one-of-a-kind finds.
Affordable Finds I Love:
These pillow covers are such a good find — the chinoiserie prints look super high-end but are actually really affordable. They come in different sizes, are very good quality, and I love the way they look on my porch.

Filters I Always Use on Etsy
When I shop Etsy, I almost always narrow things down with a few filters — it saves me from endless scrolling and helps me find the good stuff faster.
- Etsy picks Etsy highlights items with the best photography and strong reviews. Nine times out of ten, it’s a solid place to start.
- Ships from US My go-to if I need something quickly or want to avoid duty charges.
- Physical Items If you don’t check this, you’ll get buried in digital downloads.
- Vintage Perfect when I’m hunting for something unique that feels like a thrift store treasure (without leaving the house).

Easy Lighting Upgrades on a Budget
Lighting makes or breaks a room. I’ve added ceiling medallions everywhere, thrifted lamps, swapped out old shades, and even rewired vintage finds for next to nothing. Recessed lights? Those can be updated in under 10 minutes with smart LED fixtures.
