Bathroom Renovation: Using AI to Help Plan & Design

See how I used ChatGPT to plan a bathroom remodel with some smart cost-saving tricks.

Bathroom Renovation: Using AI to Help Plan & Design

Renovating a Small Bathroom On a Budget

Renovating a small bathroom can feel limiting, especially when you are trying to keep costs under control. For this guest bathroom, I used ChatGPT to help plan a classic makeover that actually made sense for the space and the budget. From beadboard wallpaper to a black and white color scheme, I focused on simple, affordable choices that made the room feel intentional without overspending.

Bathroom Renovation Cost Breakdown (Minus Existing Materials)

  • Beadboard Vinyl Wallpaper (2 rolls, but already have 1): $20
  • Chair Rail Molding (3 pieces): $51
  • Behr Black Suede Paint (1 qt.): $20
  • Behr Ultra Pure White Paint (1 gal.): $40
  • MAPEI UltraCare Grout Refresh: $18
  • Peel-and-Stick Tile Stickers (40 pack): $223

TOTAL BATHROOM RENOVATION COST: $372

How I Used Beadboard Wallpaper to Create a Classic Look

To keep this guest bathroom budget friendly, I used Better Homes & Gardens Beadboard Paintable Expanded Vinyl Wallpaper and asked ChatGPT to help me plan the layout before committing. I had two rolls total, which meant I needed to be strategic about coverage and chair rail placement.

I asked ChatGPT:

“I’m planning to use Better Homes & Gardens Beadboard Paintable Expanded Vinyl Wallpaper, for a bathroom on a budget makeover project. I have one roll measuring 20.9 inches x 33 feet (56.4 sq. ft.), and the walls total approximately 200 inches in length with a height of 108 inches. I will purchase another roll, where should I position the chair rail for the best coverage? Also, what are some budget-friendly chair rail options?”

Based on the wall dimensions and total square footage, ChatGPT recommended placing the chair rail around 42 to 48 inches from the floor. That height keeps the beadboard visually balanced while staying within the available wallpaper coverage, with paint above instead of wallpaper.

For the chair rail itself, I stuck with a simple, affordable option. Primed pine or MDF trim in the 1.5 to 2 inch rangeworks well with beadboard and is easy to install and paint. I chose a classic primed pine chair rail, which gave me the traditional look I wanted without pushing the budget.

Choosing the Best Black Behr Paint for a Windowless Bathroom

Since this bathroom has no natural light, I asked ChatGPT for a warm black to prevent the space from feeling too harsh. It recommended:

Color swatches of three paint options: Black Suede, Cracked Pepper, and Broadway.

Budget-Friendly Wall Treatments

For a balanced contrast with black beadboard, ChatGPT recommended:

Affordable Flooring Update (Under $100)

The current floor is terrible and will be the biggest expense. But, I don’t want to spend too much in a room we don’t ever ruse. With about 50 beige tiles (~13×13 inches each), I needed 56 sq. ft. of coverage.

I asked ChatGPT:

“I’m looking to renovate my bathroom to give it a traditional and expensive look, but I want to do it quickly and on a budget. I would like to spend less than $100 to update the flooring, which consists of about 50 beige ceramic tiles with permanently stained grout. What are my best options?”

Floor Paint (Most Budget-Friendly Option)

  • Rust-Oleum Home Floor Paint in Black & White – $62 per kit (per color – covers 100 sq. ft.)
  • Rust-Oleum Home Marble Countertop Coating Kit– $60 per kit  (covers 75-100 sq.)
  • BEHR PREMIUM Concrete and Garage Floor Paint– $48 a gallon
  • Tile Epoxy Coating: While not exactly “painting,” epoxy coatings for tiles provide a smooth, glossy finish that can cover tiles completely. It can be used to change the color of tiles, and it’s more durable than paint.

Grout Refresh

f your existing tile is still in good shape but the grout is making everything look dated, a grout refresh can make a big difference. It is one of the quickest and most affordable ways to update a bathroom without replacing tile. I tried this myself and was surprised by how much newer the space felt once the grout was cleaned up and refreshed. Products like MAPEI UltraCare Grout Refresh, which runs around $18, can help old tile look new again with very little effort.

Cover It Up With a Rug

Black and white geometric bathroom rugs placed in front of a toilet and bathtub on a tiled floor.

If you are not ready to replace flooring, adding a rug is an easy way to cover areas you don’t love while bringing in color and texture. It is a low commitment update that can instantly make a bathroom feel better. Sets like the one above are around $25 for a 20 by 32 inch rug and a 16 by 24 inch rug, are an affordable way to update the space without touching the floors.

Small Bathroom Decorating Ideas

You may have seen a trend of using regular curtains as shower curtains and hanging them high on the wall. I wanted to achieve this look in my own bathroom using the IKEA Ritva curtains that I already had. I wanted to add drapery trim in a black-and-white geometric pattern to the inside edge of the curtains.

A well-designed bathroom featuring white curtains framing a bathtub, with a textured tiled back wall and a clean, modern toilet.

I asked ChatGPT:

“I would like to purchase black and white geometric pattern trim to finish the edges of two 98-inch curtain panels. Additionally, I need hooks to hold back the curtains, which will be used as exterior shower curtains in two panels. The interior curtain will be waterproof and have standard dimensions. Please provide style and product recommendations to achieve this look.”

Traditional Polished Chrome Faucet

My current bathroom fixtures are a 2004 builder special, with a two-toned brass and nickel center set faucet. It’s not the vibe I want.

I asked ChatGPT:

“I want to purchase a polished chrome center-set faucet to maintain the traditional look. Please give me ideas and product suggestions to update this bathroom on a budget. I’m aiming for a high-end hotel bathroom aesthetic in a traditional and refined European style.”

To maintain a timeless look, ChatGPT recommended these budget-friendly faucet options under $100 to keep this transformation bathroom on a budget:

Refining My Search: Better Prompts for Better Results

When ChatGPT didn’t hit the mark with the answers I was looking for, I tried out these different prompts:

  • “Give me 10 more options in order of price lowest to highest”
  • “I’m looking for products with the best value for money. Please suggest 5 options that balance price and quality.”
  • “Are there any less expensive options? Give me 10 product recommendations for the cheapest options, with the easiest install and the most 5-star reviews”
  • “What are some trending products in this category? Focus on items that have the highest customer satisfaction.”
  • “Please provide a comparison of features for the top 5 best-selling products in this price range.”
  • “Are there any budget-friendly alternatives that still maintain quality? List 7 top-rated products.”
  • “Compile a list of the best options available on Amazon with at least 1,000 reviews.”
