I transformed my staircase railing with this simple Weekend DIY Project—easy, budget-friendly, and ✔ DONE in less than an hour! This weekend’s quick DIY project was all about rescuing a very messy staircase rosette.
The Challenge:

The old oval rosette on my staircase railing had to go. I cut it out with a jigsaw, but I was terrified of damaging the banister. The result was a wobbly and uneven cut. To make things worse, I patched and repainted the wall. Then I realized I’d grabbed the wrong paint color. It was bad. Really bad.
Since removing the entire banister wasn’t an option, I decided to work with what I had.. Spoiler: this involved a lot of scrap materials and patience.
How To Upgrade a Staircase With Scrap Materials
Here’s how I turned the disaster into a semi-polished upgrade:
Build-Up the Base with Scrap Materials
The jagged edges of the old rosette had sharp edges. I needed to create a clean, raised base.

Adding Lattice Trim
Next, I wrapped the rosette base with scrap PVC lattice pieces. Thankfully, I had paneling adhesive leftover from my beadboard project (linking to that for all the details) After that, then I tacked it with my nail gun.

Adding Cap Molding
I used miter shears to cut angles for a cap molding. This created a little “box” around the base. Then, adhesive and pin nails ensured everything stayed snugly in place.

Caulking & Finishing
Finally, I caulked all the gaps to hide any gaps or imperfections.

What’s Left?
First I painted the rosette white, cleaned up the scuffs on the black railing and gave it a quick touch-up. I love to use these little craft brushes to paint intricate details, like around this banister profile.
Final Reveal

Lessons Learned:
- First and foremost – always double-check your paint color before diving into touch-ups.
- Also, Miter shears are a lifesaver for small projects like this.
- Scrap materials and adhesive can save you a trip to the hardware store. Keep an eye out for more DIY scrap wood projects coming your way!
