Home / All Posts / Organization And Storage Ideas For The Garage

I took an extended Thanksgiving break, which was filled with family, food, and some much-needed downtime. Now, I’m finally ready to get back to my DIY projects. Between school being out and traveling, it feels like I’ve been running non-stop. So jumping back into unfinished projects requires a bit of mental (and physical) resetting. And let’s be honest, the garage is chaos.

What I Did:

The first step back into productivity? Cleaning up my workspace. My garage currently looks like the aftermath of an earthquake—tools, wood scraps, and half-used paint cans scattered everywhere. I can’t even find my favorite tape measure (because, let’s be real, everyone has a favorite).

I started by clearing a path to the workbench because tripping hazards are no fun. Then came the real challenge: putting everything back in its rightful place. This is the part I always underestimate, but having an organized garage makes finishing DIY projects so much easier.

Sorted Tools by Type:

organized tools
  • Hand tools back on their respective drawers.
  • All drill bits organized in their cases
  • Power tools in their cases. I like using the air compressor for this step—it really gets everything clean. Since it’s already out (like everything else at this point), it’ll be the last thing I put away.
  • I still have a junk box of miscellaneous screws that I have to organize. But it’s neatly tucked away in a drawer.

Gathered Scraps:

scrap wood
  • Kept the usable wood and recycled the rest. This is the hardest part for me because I am a hoarder.
  • Tossed dried-up paint cans and random odds and ends.

Cleaned the Floors:

vacuuming garage floor
  • Swept up sawdust and debris.
  • Used out the central vacuum machine to vacuum up everything the broom left behind. And decided it will now be the garage vacuum cleaner, because I don’t use it in my house.
  • Which led me to spray painting the plastic piping for the system- that has seen better days.

With the garage cleaned and tools put away, I finally feel like I can breathe again. Everything is where it should be, and I even created a designated spot for my next round of materials. Now I’m ready to tackle the rest of the unfinished projects on my list. Without losing time searching for tools—or stressing out over the mess.

5 Expert Tips to Transform Your Garage with a Clean-Out

1. Start with a Clear Plan

Before diving in, assess your garage space and decide how you want to use it. Whether it’s for parking, a workshop, or storage, having a vision helps you prioritize what stays and what goes. Sketch out zones for tools, seasonal gear, and everyday essentials.

2. Sort and Purge Ruthlessly

Create three piles: Keep, Donate/Sell, and Trash. Be honest — if you haven’t used it in a year, it’s probably time to let it go. Properly dispose of hazardous materials like old paint or automotive fluids.

Pro Tip: Schedule a donation pickup or bulk trash day in advance to stay motivated.

Simply dial 1(800)CLEANUP, or simply enter in the material you are trying to recycle along with your zip code and click search.

3. Maximize Vertical and Overhead Space

Install sturdy wall-mounted shelves, pegboards for tools, and overhead storage racks for items you use less frequently. Keep floor space clear for easier navigation and a cleaner look.

Product Recommendation: We use the below three products and they are perfect for garage storage.

4. Label and Organize Storage Bins

Transparent bins are ideal, but if using opaque ones, label each clearly with its contents. Group similar items together (holiday decorations, sports gear, etc.) for quick access.

Product Recommendation: Check out these durable weatherproof labels below:

5. Create a Maintenance Routine

A clean garage won’t stay that way without regular upkeep. Schedule seasonal cleanups to stay ahead of clutter. Wipe down surfaces, check for expired supplies, and reorganize as needed.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes, taking a break is just as important as making progress.

While cleaning the garage wasn’t exactly fun, it was necessary. Now, I can get back to transforming spaces and finishing what I started. Day 10 wasn’t glamorous, but it was productive—and that’s what matters.

Up next: finally checking another DIY off the list. Stay tuned!
