When I started designing my son’s “big boy” bedroom, I wanted it to feel timeless without feeling old. I pulled together a vintage-inspired mood board that mixes classic pieces—like a thrifted desk—with a few modern updates to keep it feeling fresh. I’m layering in his personality with sports memorabilia and subtle vintage details, like old-school pennants, so the room feels grown-up but still fun. It’s a space he can grow into, not out of.

How Pinterest Inspired My Son’s “Big Boy Room” Renovation

The mood board we created for his room is a mix of vintage and new pieces, with a subtle sports theme.

I handed my phone to my son and searched for “big boy rooms” on Pinterest. He was super pumped and couldn’t contain his happiness as he discussed his latest wall paneling ideas with me every morning. I, being an artist by trade, proposed the idea of DIY hand-painted wallpaper, but he forbade it. He preferred grasscloth or striped linen instead. He, despite being only six years old, is an old soul.

Mixing Thrifted Finds with a Few DIYs

We plan on checking out our local thrift stores for a vintage desk and I found tons of vintage sports memorabilia on Etsy. I might have to bite the bullet and buy a new dresser because I’ve thrifted and had second-hand dressers, it’s not been great. I plan on making the pennants myself, with his favorite sports teams, and places he has been. He was set on the monogrammed pillow, and after checking out the going rate for those, I will learn a new skill. Embroidering tutorials anyone?

How It’s Coming Together

This mood board helped shape a bedroom that feels classic without feeling stuffy. By mixing vintage pieces with a newer updates and adding in his favorite things made the room feel grown-up but still very him. It’s the kind of space he can grow into without needing a total redo in a few years.

This room definitely isn’t coming together overnight. It’s a mix of thrift store finds, a few DIY projects I’m probably overconfident about, and some trial and error. But that’s what makes it fun—and honestly, that’s how most of our house gets done.
